Building with the Valley

Volcanic stone, aged teak and lime plaster — the material language of the residence.

Contemporary Balinese architecture is often reduced to a roof shape. The Ridge Residence begins instead with the terrain.

Pavilions step down the hillside on existing rice terrace walls. Stone was quarried within thirty kilometres; the teak is reclaimed from Javanese houses; the plaster is lime, burnished by hand.

The result is a house that is cool without machinery and quiet without insulation.
